How long to keep ors hair relaxer in before you wash it off?

I have thick wavy hair how long should I keep the relaxer on before I wash it off on the directions it says 20 min for application and smoothing(is that just 4 smoothing and application?) I don't know how long you just let it sit on your hair (im confused) please help.
