HELP--got a citation for an uninsured moped?

Today I got my first ticket after 6 years, since I got my license. I was driving my moped (in the state of Oregon, by the way) and got pulled over, when I told the cop I didn't have insurance. Now I have car insurance, just not moped insurance, because for some reason I was convinced insurance wasn't required on a moped. Will this ignorance help me in court, and since this is my first offense EVER. The base fine is $287. If it helps, the violation was ORS 806.010. Could I also claim that I confused "motor assisted scooter" with "moped" under exemptions (ORS 806.020). This is my first appearance in court--any advice helps!
